What Does Couples Counselling Cost? Prices, Process and Therapy vs Counselling
Jacqueline Klemke · 6 min read
Cost is often the first question – and sometimes it stops couples from seeking support at all. This article shows what to expect, how couples counselling differs from couples therapy and how to weigh the investment realistically.
Couples counselling or couples therapy?
Couples therapy is for couples where a mental illness is the focus or needs treatment. It is provided by licensed psychotherapists.
Systemic couples counselling or couples coaching supports couples with communication problems, recurring conflict, trust issues and life transitions. It is not medical treatment but support on equal terms.
What to expect in terms of cost
Couples sessions usually last longer than individual ones because both perspectives need space. In my Frankfurt practice, couples counselling costs EUR 200 for 90 minutes and EUR 280 for 120 minutes, with a EUR 40 weekend surcharge.
Many couples make good progress in four to eight sessions, often two to four weeks apart, leaving time to try new things in everyday life.
Does health insurance pay?
Couples counselling and coaching are not covered by statutory health insurance in Germany and are usually paid privately. The upside: no diagnosis, no waiting lists and no insurance records.
Church-run and municipal counselling centres sometimes offer low-cost options, often with longer waiting times.
