Healthy Conflict: How Couples Argue Constructively

Happy couples don't argue less – they argue differently. What matters isn't whether conflicts arise, but how you treat each other when things get difficult.

Common traps

Generalisations ("You always …"), contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling escalate conflict. Often an argument isn't really about the dishes but about needs for recognition, closeness or space.

Building blocks for fair arguing

Use I-statements, stick to one topic and listen actively: summarise what you understood before you reply. An agreed time-out when things get heated isn't withdrawal – it's self-care.

Repair as a ritual

Couples who consciously reconnect after conflict – with a gesture, a conversation, a shared moment – strengthen their trust. In couples coaching we practise new patterns of conversation in a safe setting.
