Midlife Crisis: Recognising the Signs and Using Midlife as an Opportunity
Jacqueline Klemke · 7 min read
Somewhere between 40 and 55 many people ask questions that never had room before: Is this it? What do I want to do with the time I have left? The so-called midlife crisis is not a diagnosis but a transition – and often the start of a more conscious phase of life.
Typical signs
Restlessness and a fear of missing out. Doubts about work or the relationship. An urge for radical change – or, conversely, paralysis and withdrawal. This period often coincides with other transitions: children becoming independent, parents needing support, a changing body.
Why midlife stirs so much
At midlife many people take stock. Life plans that carried them for years suddenly no longer quite fit. That is not failure but a sign that values and needs have evolved.
Seen systemically, it is never just one person who changes: partners, family and work all respond.
How systemic coaching helps
Rather than overturning everything in a rush, we clarify what you truly miss and what may stay. Through values work, resource mapping and the miracle question, a picture of the second half of life emerges.
From there you develop small, concrete steps – professionally and personally.
When further help makes sense
If low mood, sleep problems or hopelessness persist for weeks, please speak to your GP. Coaching does not replace psychotherapy. In an acute crisis in Germany, TelefonSeelsorge is available 24/7 on 0800 111 0 111.
