Moving to a New Home: Settling In When Everything Is New

A move is more than a change of address. We leave behind familiar routes, neighbourhoods and friendships. Whether for work, for love or for a fresh start – even a welcome move can take an emotional toll.

Homesickness is normal

After the first euphoria, a phase of disillusionment often follows. Feelings of loneliness or homesickness are not signs of a wrong decision – they are part of settling in.

When the whole family moves

Every family member experiences the move differently. Children lose friends; partners sometimes give up their job or network. Talking openly about these different experiences strengthens the family as a whole.

Small steps towards belonging

Familiar routines, a favourite spot in the new neighbourhood, a club or a class: small anchors create belonging. At the same time, old relationships deserve to be nurtured.
