Recognising Stress Before It Makes You Ill: Early Warning Signs
Jacqueline Klemke · 6 min read
Stress itself isn't harmful – it helps us rise to challenges. It becomes a problem when recovery is missing for too long. The signs are often quiet: poor sleep, irritability, the feeling of never being finished.
Take early warning signs seriously
Physically: tension, headaches or frequent infections. Emotionally: less patience and joy. In behaviour: hobbies and friendships fall away and breaks are skipped.
As a Mental Health First Aider I know: the earlier we notice, the easier it is to change course.
Stress is systemic
Stress rarely arises only in our heads. Expectations at work, family duties and our own standards interact. In coaching we look at these dynamics and search for the levers that make a difference.
First steps towards balance
Small islands of recovery, clear boundaries and honest conversations with your partner, family or manager bring real relief. It also helps to ask: which of these things really have to be done by me?
Important: if exhaustion, hopelessness or physical symptoms persist, please see your GP. Coaching does not replace medical or psychotherapeutic treatment.
