Getting Over a Breakup: Stages, Feelings and Finding Your Way Back to Yourself

Jacqueline Klemke · 7 min read

A breakup often shakes more than the relationship itself: daily routines, future plans, friendships and sometimes your self-image. Whether you were left or chose to leave, grief, anger and relief can take turns. That is normal.

The typical stages

Many people first experience shock and denial, then strong feelings such as anger, pain or guilt. Later comes a phase of reorientation in which you begin to shape your life anew.

These stages rarely run in a straight line. Setbacks are part of it and don't mean you are "not coping".

What helps day to day

Routines provide stability: sleep, movement, regular meals. Talk to people you trust. Consciously reduce social-media contact if it keeps pulling you back.

Write down what you want to take with you from the relationship – and what you don't.

When children are involved

As parents you remain a team even when the partnership ends. Clear agreements, reliable handovers and not criticising each other in front of the children relieve everyone.
